Setting Sail: Our Unforgettable First Disney Cruise Experience

Published on 1 October 2024 at 16:48

In 2019, we took the plunge and booked our very first Disney Cruise. Let me tell you, it was a crash course in savvy vacation planning. From snagging discounts to mastering online check-ins, we learned quickly though. As a family, we were set on a cruise getaway, and Disney was the obvious choice for us. Despite hearing all sorts of negative chatter about it being pricey and serving nothing but hot dogs and chicken nuggets.

Nevertheless, we were undeterred and embarked on a mission to showcase the true worth of our decision. While it's true that Disney Cruises come with a higher price tag compared to some other lines, we found that the added value was undeniable. With perks like complimentary soft drinks, access to three main dining restaurants per ship (none of which served just hot dogs and nuggets, mind you), character meet-and-greets, a thrilling pirate-themed night complete with deck parties, unlimited soft serve ice cream, captivating live stage shows, movies, and so much more, the experience was truly unparalleled.

But lets circle back to the dining for a minute, we were indulging in 3 course gourmet meals where you can order as many dishes as your heart desires, two desserts-absolutely, 3 appetizers -dig right in, 2 entrees - go for it. The dining experience follows a rotational system, where guests alternate between three distinct themed dining rooms. Once onboard, you receive your personalized dining schedule, with early seating typically around 5:45 and late seating around 8:15. For cruises lasting three nights or more, you're ensured to dine at each restaurant at least once.

However, what truly sets rotational dining apart is the continuity of service. Your dedicated servers rotate with you, creating a seamless journey across different culinary settings. This personalized touch allows them to learn your preferences, cater to your tastes, and sometimes leave a lasting impression that makes the entire experience unforgettable.

I won't delve into specific details about the shows, but I must emphasize their absolute brilliance. During "Beauty and the Beast," I found myself moved to tears. These are Broadway-style musicals that immerse you fully, making you feel like an integral part of the performance.

If you're unsure about motion sickness, consider starting with a shorter cruise and packing some motion sickness medication, but if you happen to forget, rest assured you can visit the medical center onboard where they provide passengers with over-the-counter motion sickness medication like Dramamine, all at no extra charge.

As newcomers to Disney Cruises, we encountered some difficulty securing onboard activities due to their limited availability. Castaway Club members, recognized by Disney Cruise Lines for their previous voyages, enjoy advanced booking privileges. However, this didn't dampen our spirits for long as there was still lots to do, and we still had an incredible time and created countless cherished memories. In fact, shortly after, we eagerly booked our next adventure, but that's a story for another time.
